Veronica Garcia-Melendez – Interview

Live Loops, Craigslist, and Club One

Multitalented singer-songwriter Veronica Garcia-Melendez of indie synth-pop duo Bero Bero is interviewed about her influences, her creative process, her new band the Maxines, and much more.

What is your earliest musical memory?

I was a about 5 at my aunt’s house on a holiday. Everyone was taking turns giving a little performance like reciting a poem, singing a song, or playing guitar. I really wanted to try out my cousin’s piano. They let me have a turn and I made up a song on that piano. I still remember the stress and excitement of choosing the best note to end “my song” on. Haha.

Who are some of your influences?

Everything but mostly new wave, post punk, hip-hop and jazz.

Describe your creative process …

Either improvising or singing stuff in my head. I usually start with a bass line and a drum groove and go from there.

Talk a bit about your band Bero Bero …

Well, my bandmate David Murray started using backing tracks on some songs with our previous band. The tracks were stem bounces of extra synths and percussion from our studio sessions. So, we got the idea in mind to write specifically with the intention of using tracks to perform as a duo. After that, we added songs where I create live loops and perform with those as well. Basically, our band is about synths and percussion and we look for ways to fill out the sound so we sound like more than just two people.

How did you get your start in the Savannah music scene?

I moved to Savannah in 2014. I went onto Craigslist and saw that Street Clothes was looking for a keyboard player. I went to their practice on a Monday night and played through of bunch of their songs with them. We all went over to Wormhole after played songs for their Open Mic. Andy Sutphen and I have been pals ever since and we made two fun albums together.

What is the best professional advice you’ve ever been given?

Don’t quit.

Name a Savannah artist who you’d love to collaborate with and why?

Well, I just started another band called The Maxines. It’s a guitar-driven, all-female project with artist AJ Grey and Maddie & Coco Oke. I’m playing bass and having an awesome time. We’re playing at El Rocko on February 12 with the Manarovs and a couple touring acts.

What are some of your favorite local venues to perform at?

Wormhole, El Rocko – I miss the Jinx. Playing Victory North was awesome and although Club One doesn’t usually have bands, the times I played in the mirror room was sweet.

Your thoughts on the state of the Savannah music scene …

I feel like people are generally supportive in the scene. We could use more venues that support local creative and original music though.

What’s next for you?

More music. Bero Bero is back to doing shows. We just released a new single called “Passion” and we’re working on new material, soon to be released. Also, look out for show dates and new music from The Maxines.
